Wednesday while being ill and high on painkillers and such I went to see Ryan Bingham at the Paradiso in Amsterdam. I've tried to keep my composure and don't know if it was the combination of painkillers and beer but i had to yell like a cowboy a few times. The thing was that I've shouldn't have gone because I was still pretty ill the next day. I still had the chance to meet Liam who opened the whole European endeavor for Ryan and spoke to Ryan's drummer. Good folks who like good music. I took pictures but I was so shaky by fever, painkillers and beer they all turned out crap.

Okay, most musicians and their record labels use any excuse to generate a buzz around them. The 'honest card' has been played multiple times and most of the time the musicians never follow through. Because they are just not as genuine as they say they are. Because non of the song, they have written them selfs or they rather show up at award ceremonies and be popular. In this case it's not just music marketing mumbo jumbo, it's the real deal, no tricks, no cards being hold back.
The first time I heard some of his song I knew I had to buy his record Dead Horses. His second album 'Mescalito' is coming out this October, the 3rd of October to be exact. And though it sounds more produced and less raw then the other, I'm buying it again.
The making of Mescalito
I like his raw voice and simplistic approach to his songs. Not that these songs are simple of thoughts or simple music. But rather give him an acoustic guitar and an amp and I'm sure he could out perform many musician just with his songs and not virtuous guitar play. He's a songwriter of the old tradition. He's Ryan Bingham.

I guess the last time I really was surprised by the music or hit where I life was listening to Derek Trucks. The last few months I've been blown away by Ryan Bingham groovy, dry alternative country rock? I don't know if that's the right name or label for the songs he write. And I mean he really can writes songs, that's what they are. Not overproduced because the song are strong enough to stand on their own feet. But why listen to me jabbering while you could experience Ryan in an audience recorded videoclip? Enjoy!
Cheers
